Sustain Mlanda is providing oppotunities for the teenagers in the Orphan Care project to be trainned by local people to gain skills such as carpentry and tailoring. After training and with support from Sustain Mlanda and their trainer they will be able to start their own business.
Sustain Mlanda see this as an essential way to empower these orphaned teenagers for the long term, whilst also supporting those who pass on their skill or trade. We are trying to ensure that these skills are as relevant as possible to the individual but also to the community so that successful businesses will one day be created.
Currently we have six orphans being trained in skills:
- Two boys, aged 16; Honex and Enoch are being trained to be carpenters with the support of Mr Skinner, a local carpenter.
- Charles has begun an apprenticeship with a local garage, to train as a mechanic.
- Nema, Nkhawa and Lubi are being taught by Akisa, our home craft worker to use the sewing machine we provided in July 2009. They are also learning to knit, and it is hoped that they will shortly start selling the items they have made.
Sustain Mlanda is desperate to see more people trained with skills which they can use for the long term, but we need your support to enable this to happen.
- Enoch – Carpentry
