Secondary School fees in Malawi are an enormous burden on parents. One term costs 3,000 Malawi Kwacha (£15) which is also, on average the equivalent to a whole month’s income for a family in Mlanda, where most live under the poverty line. Therefore to pay this amount three times a year, Secondary education for most teenagers is longed for but financially impossible.
Sustain Mlanda has linked up with the teachers at the Mlanda Primary school each year to determine a group of students who would be suitable for Secondary School but are unable to pay the fees.
For the past four years we have successfully linked these pupils with sponsors in the UK. Sustain Mlanda has seen four pupils sucessfully through school, and are currently supporting five pupils. This has often linked with our orphan program in Chiphikira, where many of the children we support are of Secondary school age.
The student recieves all their school and examination fees, uniform, stationary and exercise books.
The sponsor gives £15, three times a year and receives regular feedback from the student they are supporting.
